In 2017 WNIJ sent me to cover the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. I had to bike from the Missouri river to the Mississippi in one week, talking to folks. To be honest, having done RAGBRAI a half dozen times previously, I was probably going to do it again anyway.

I learned a secret of RAGBRAI—it’s not just bikes and beer. It’s about infusing small pockets of forgotten Iowa with millions of dollars for various projects: new meet mats for wrestling teams, roof repairs for churches, and in one Iowa town, Hasidic, meat-packing Jews searching out lost souls.
